The official opening of Fawcett Park on 8 September was a great event for all the team involved in the project. Dozens of local people representing business, local government and community, attended the event hosted by Lord Devonport, Chair of the Project Genesis Trust.
The Fawcett Park name recognises the key role played by development entrepreneurs Jack and
Caroline Fawcett.
The park covers two hectares of land which was once occupied by the town’s steelworks and features play areas, wildflower areas, a timber trim trail as well as hosting a section of the popular C2C cycle way and providing access to the Derwent Walk.
Over 12,000 shrubs and trees were planted in park Fawcett Park which is also home to two magnificent large-scale public artworks; the Genesis Circle conceived and designed by Cumbrian based artist Chris Brammall and an original iron hook, found and rescued during clearance work on the site.
